Capturing in DivX with Virtual Dub

1.1

Getting started:

When capturing in realtime DivX you will need some power in your PC system.

But I think that my computer has more than enough power to mannage the capturing.

My computer that I used in this guide:

AMD Athlon 1200Mhz

512MB RAM

GeFORCE 2

Pixleview 878 (TV IN)

Download and install these software.

VirtualDUB 1.4 or greater

DivX Codec 3.11

Those softwares can be found at http://www.digital-digest.com

1.2

Settings

When you have installed the softwares start your original TV software and choose the channel you want to capture from.

Then start VirtualDUB, go to “File” and choose Capture Mode. If you can see the TV picture and here the sound, evreything is ok. Now we are going to choose the DivX Codec. Go to “Video” and choose “Compression” and select “DivX ;-) MPEG-4 Low Motion”. Now press the configure button and choose the bitrate. (You can use a DivX Bitrate Calulator to calculate the final file size. For ex. if you want to put the movie on a CD later.)

I used 900 KiloBit/sec when I recorded a moive that was 86 minutes long and I got the final size to 649 MB.

Now click ok till you got back to the main window. Now go to “Video” and “Set custom format”, now you can choose the resolution, my advice is to use 512x384 or 640x480 pixles since we want the best quality. Go back to main window and choose “Capture” and “Settings” to setup the FPS. The FPS should be 25.0 (PAL) and check so that “Capture audio” is marked (unless you want no sound).

When you are back at the main window go to “Audio” and choose “Compression”.

When capturing you must use the PCM format and for the best quality, use:

PCM, 44 100 Hz; 16Bits; Stereo. (We will compress the audio later in this guide.)

1.3

Capture

Now the setup is finnished and we are ready to capture. Go to “File” and choose

“Set capture file”, enter where you want to save the movie and click ok.

Go to “Capture” and choose “Capture Video” too start capturing.

When you are capturing in DivX you should close all other programs to get the best result.

To finnish the capture press any button on your mouse and the capturing will stop.

2.1

Edit

Now you should have an AVI file, locate the file and you will see that the file is bigger than you thought, don’t worry nothing is wrong. The AVI file is big because that we haven’t compressed the audio yet. Now open VirtualDUB and go to “File” choose
”Open video file”, locate and open the captured file.

Now we are going to compress the sound to make the file size smaller.

Go to “Video” and select “Direc stream copy”, and now go to “Audio” to select

“Full processing mode”. Select “Compression” under the “Audio” menu and choose

“Divx ;-) Audio” now you can choose a lot of different bitrates. For normal quality select “128 kbps, 44KHz, 16kb/s”.

Now go to “File” and “Save as avi”.

2.2

Finnished

Now everything is done and you should have a playable avi file.

If your movie is lagging try to capture at lower resolution but that will decrase the quality.

Yoy should always make a test to see if it works before you start capturing.

If you not are using PAL and want to capture anyway, I strongly recomend that you read
